About Cedar & Slate Roofing
Cedar & Slate Roofing is a family-run roofing company in Chattanooga, TN, owned by Dale and Marisa Whitaker. Dale has worked on roofs since 2001. They started the company in 2009 and now run 2 crews of their own, serving homeowners across Hamilton County and North Georgia.
The owners
Who are Dale and Marisa Whitaker?
Dale Whitaker grew up in East Ridge and started carrying shingles up ladders for a local roofer at 19. By 2009 he had spent 8 years on other companies’ crews and wanted to do it his own way.
Marisa spent 8 years handling claims at an insurance office downtown. She knows what an adjuster needs to see and how to write it down. Together they started Cedar & Slate Roofing from their garage in Red Bank with one truck and one crew.
Today the office is on Market Street, there are 2 crews of 5, and Dale still climbs on most roofs himself for the first inspection.

Our story
How did Cedar & Slate Roofing get started?
17 years, 1 town, 1 way of working.
- 2001
Dale starts roofing
Dale takes a job as a laborer on a roofing crew in Hamilton County and learns the trade from the ground up.
- 2009
Cedar & Slate Roofing opens
Dale and Marisa start the company from their garage in Red Bank with one truck, one crew and a rule to give every price in writing.
- 2014
Metal roofing added
Homeowners on Signal and Lookout Mountain kept asking for metal, so the crew trained on standing seam installs.
- 2019
A second crew and a real office
Cedar & Slate moves to 1420 Market Street and adds a second full-time crew so storm calls do not push back booked jobs.
- 2026
Still family-run
Still local, still our own 2 crews, and still the same 2 names on every estimate.

Yes. Cedar & Slate Roofing holds a Tennessee contractor license and carries general liability and workers compensation insurance on every crew member.

What do customers say about Dale and Marisa?
Our old roof was leaking over the kitchen. Dale came out the next morning, showed us photos of the problem and gave us a written price that day. The crew finished in 2 days and picked up every nail.
After the April hailstorm we had no idea where to start. Marisa walked us through the insurance claim and met the adjuster at our house. Calm, clear and on time.
